From his early writing days with 28 Days Later, to his Oscar-nominated Ex Machina, to his latest A24 blockbuster Civil War, Garland is has built an admirable filmography and an established, attractive cinematic style. 

 

And yet, some of his outputs (Men) and general tendencies for storytelling are often off-putting/alienating/disengaging, and prevent him from climbing to the top of the auteur filmmaker ladder alongside the greats.
